One of the many
benefits of marriage is that a foreign national can receive his or
her lawful permanent residence based on marriage to a U.S. citizen.
As a general
rule, however, immigration benefits do not occur ìautomatically.î
Rather, if a person wants a benefit from the INS, he or she must
submit an application along with required supporting
documentation. Obtaining immigration benefits as a result of a
recent marriage is no exception.
Filing the
appropriate petition and accompanying documents can be a confusing
and difficult process. The supporting documents required by the
INS will vary depending upon the length of oneís marriage, oneís
financial status, and other factors. Submitting the appropriate
documentation is essential to having the INS approve a petition.
