Melanie K. (Uptgraft) Reichert was born in Lafayette, Indiana, while her parents attended Purdue University. She learned the value and importance of family while growing up on a small farm in rural, northeastern Indiana.
Following her graduation from Southern Wells High School, Melanie attended Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois on a full tuition, four-year academic scholarship. While at Millikin, she cultivated a love of writing and journalism by serving as news editor and editor-in-chief of the school’s award-winning newspaper.
Prior to beginning a legal education, Melanie worked as a feature reporter for the Bluffton News-Banner and as an on-air personality for WNUY Radio.
Melanie attended Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis where she wrote for the International and Comparative Law Review. During her second year of law school, Melanie began working in family law as a clerk.
After graduating from law school in 1998, Melanie began a solo practice in Indianapolis which she later merged with Lewis & Kappes, P.C. With two other attorneys, Melanie established Newton Becker Reichert in 2002. Also in 2002, she married her husband, Eddie.
Following the birth of her first two children, Melanie joined BKR as of counsel to provide a flexible schedule and more time with family. In 2007, the Reicherts welcomed their third child.
She has focused her practice on family law throughout her career, but also serves clients in the areas of estate planning and general litigation. In January 2006, she received training as a collaborative lawyer.
Melanie’s knowledge of family law earned her a position as Commissioner in Marion County Circuit Court, Paternity Division. During her tenure from 2001 to 2004, Melanie served as a judicial officer on cases involving custody, child support modifications, and protective orders. She still regularly serves as judge pro tempore. Melanie has also volunteered as court appointed advocate for children or guardian ad litem, and received recognition for her service in 2002 from Child Advocates, Inc.
Each year, she teaches seminars to attorneys, paralegals or social workers covering all areas of domestic relations law.
In addition to family and work, Melanie volunteers with the Marion County MOMS project, the Hamilton County Guardian ad Litem program, and the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic.
